This school is located on the outskirts of the Mathare slum, just behind the MEFAG shelter. In fact, some of the MEFAG children follow there primary and upper primary classes here. The school has 10 teachers and currently about 244 children from the baby-class upto the 8th-primary grade.
The building and facilities are slightly higher of quality then the rest of the buildings in the area. During my unexpected visit, the order and discipline in that small school was remarkable and the teachers seemed well motivated. The material to teach on the other hand, is on the best second hand…. Most of the classes are 3 by 4 meter, some even smaller. In the baby-class, the room is no more then 3m by 4m and houses 38 children.
The school receives some funding from the community of Mathare and gifts. In this area of high poverty this school and the work of the teachers is an absolute necessity for those kids to be able to escape from there life in this poor suburb of Nairobi.
Contact one of the above local contacts to see if you can arrange a visit to the centre.
Bfoundation is trying to find a way too provide some structured help as well as support to make some necessary repairs to the housing and infrastructure.
